THE 2022 RECIPIENTS OF THE LIMA SHAWNEE ALUMNI-LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Kaitlyn E. Curl - Recipient of a $1,000 Alumni-Legacy Scholarship

As a student at Shawnee, Kaitlyn participated on multiple sports teams.  She captained both the Swim Team and Cross Country Team achieving state level competition in Cross Country.  She has been part of the Breakfast Club, Spirit Club, Science Club and Students Against Destructive Decisions. Kaitlyn was also continuously engaged in community work during the school year and in the summer. Kaitlyn participated in Spring Clean-up at the United Methodist Church and served as a ‘volunteen’ at St. Rita’s Memorial hospital. In the Fall of 2022, Kaitlyn will attend Bowling Green State University to begin her journey to reach her long-term goal of being a Pediatric nurse.


Brianna N. Ridenour - Recipient of a $1,000. Alumni-Legacy Scholarship

While a student at Shawnee, Brianna served as president for student government, Vice President of the Octagon Club, treasurer of the National Honor Society, and co-president of the Anti-Racism Club.  She also participated in Students Against Destructive Decisions, Spanish, and Spirit Club.   As part of the Girls Varsity Soccer Team Brianna served as a team captain for 2 years helping to lead them to the Division 2 Regional finals and in 2021 she was named player of the year for the Western Buckeye League.   In the community, Brianna worked with United Way and the West Ohio Food Bank distributing food crates during the Covid pandemic. She was a counselor with Apex Sports Zone summer camps and a coach with Youth Summer Soccer Camps.  Brianna worked with students from other area schools as part of the Lima/Allen County Youth Leadership Program and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Brianna will attend The Ohio State University in the fall of 2022 as an undergraduate working towards her goal of eventually attending the Ohio State School of Optometry.


Taylor A. Stumbaugh - Recipient of a $1,000 Shawnee Alumni-Legacy Scholarship

Taylor was on the honor roll all 4 years at Shawnee High School.  During her time at Shawnee, Taylor participated in SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and the Anti-Racism Club. She helped with the Breakfast Club and served as secretary for the Art Club. She regularly published articles monthly in the school newspaper, the Chief. Taylor was Captain of the tennis team and received multiple awards while the team won the Western Buckeye League championship. Taylor served as a volunteer at St. Rita’s Memorial for multiple years.  She works with Big Brother/Big Sisters and was a big sister to middle school students for three years. In the fall of 2022, Taylor will attend Miami University of Ohio in the College of Arts and Sciences.


Audrey L. Wheeler - Recipient of a $1,000. Shawnee Alumni-Legacy Scholarship

At Shawnee, Audrey worked diligently on the staff of the Quilna yearbook, specifically on the sports section and spreads.  She gave up study hall time to volunteer as an aid in the Ceramic Studio helping other students with their work and projects. In the community, Audrey volunteered in food drives for the West Ohio Food Bank. Outside of school, Audrey juggled multiple jobs, including the care and training of over twenty horses. Audrey plans to attend the University of Toledo in the fall of 2022 to reach her long-term goal of becoming a future educator. 


Lillian A. Cleaves - Recipient of the $4,000. Zarzar-Portmann Scholarship for Medicine 

During her high school years, Lily excelled at academics and other pursuits.  She participated in Spirit Club, Octagon Club, TEAMS competition, Students Against Destructive Decisions and Spanish Club. She was a multiple sport athlete including soccer, cross country and track, reaching league, district and state distinction.  Lily was a part of student government and National Honor Society, serving as Vice President in both organizations. In the community, Lily participated in St. Rita’s ‘volunteen’ program and the Big Brother/Big Sister program. Lily will attend The Ohio State University in the fall of 2022, on a pre-med track, majoring in Biology. 


Cara B. DeBrosse - Recipient of the $4,000. Keith and Deborah Wandell Scholarship

The arts, in many forms, have been an important part of Cara’s time at Shawnee.  She was President of the Art Club for 4 years working to engage younger kids and the greater community in the Arts. Cara published regularly in the Avatar, Shawnee’s online art publication.  She played percussion in the Shawnee Band and participated in other Shawnee organizations including the National Honor Society, the Anti-racism Club, Varsity Valorant and TEAMS, the Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science yearly competition. Under Cara’s leadership as Co-Captain of the Shawnee Girls Tennis Team, the team went undefeated and won 1st place in the Western Buckeye League.  Cara’s love of music carries into the greater community as she has served as Assistant Concertmaster with the Lima Area Youth Orchestra. Cara will be attending The Ohio State University in the fall of 2022 to study architecture.


Kaelan M. Swallow - Recipient of the $2,000. Kirk Family Foundation Scholarship

As a student at Shawnee High School, Kaelan was President of the Spanish Club and Captain of the Varsity Girls Soccer Team. She was a member of the National Honor Society and a student government representative.  Kaelan participated in TEAMS, the Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics and Science yearly competition.  As part of the Octagon club Kaelan worked to establish Rivals Week involving local businesses and raising funds for a local charity. In the community Kaelan volunteered at her church working with special needs children and leading Bible study groups.  She also participated in the ‘volunteen’ program at St. Rita’s Memorial Hospital and was named a United Way of Lima Volunteer of the Year.  Kaelan’s long-term goal is to work as an educator in higher education. She will attend Cedarville University in the fall to begin working toward that goal.
